Famous People Who Have Benefited From Mentors
Many of the people that you see at the top of success today have had mentors that have helped them along the way. People with mentors have the upper hand at success by being able to lean on others for support and advice who have previously walked in their shoes. Listed are famous and successful people who credit their mentors for helping them achieve the position they are at today.
Mark Zuckerberg – Former Apple Inc. CEO, the late Steve Jobs, served as a mentor to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. They often met to discuss business strategy. Zuckerberg says that the mentorship was great because they both wanted to create a product that wasn’t just good for business but also changed the lives of people. Steve Jobs showed him how he could build a great team that was as focused on building high quality and good things as Zuckerberg was.
Kyung B. Yoon – Connie Chung was the first woman to co-anchor CBS Evening News and the second woman to anchor one of America’s major network newscasts. Kyung B. Yoon, a Fox News reporter explained that she did not view television journalism as a viable career when she was younger but was then inspired by Chung to pursue a career in it.
Bob Dylan – Woody Guthrie’s is known for his musical legacy includes hundreds of political, traditional, and children’s song that includes “This Land is Your Land.” He helped to mentor fellow singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. Dylan always looked up to Guthrie and listened to his music as a high school student in the 1950s. When he moved to NYC he befriended Guthrie and played his music and songs for him and sought advice. In 1962, Dylan released “Song to Woody,” an ode to Guthrie.
Sally Ride – Sally Ride was the first American woman in space in 1983. Her graduate school professor, Dr. Arthur Walker, initially encouraged her to apply to NASA. He was her lifelong mentor and instilled confidence in her that allowed her to follow her dreams.
Jillian Michaels – Financial advisor Suze Orman has been a mentor to personal trainer Jillian Michaels. Though they seem like an unlikely mentor/mentee relationship, Suze Orman says that the best mentors help their mentees find their own paths and succeed on their own terms instead of creating a cookie cutter mold.
Oprah Winfrey – The late Maya Angelou, a celebrated author and poet mentored Oprah Winfrey who is best known for her talk show. Oprah says that Maya helped guide her through many important milestones in her life and commented that she doesn’t think anyone in this world makes it without having a great mentor.
Bill Gates – Bill Gates helped achieve his billionaire success from Warren Buffet. Gates credits Buffet for teaching him how to deal with tough situations and how to think long term. Gates admires that Buffet can turn complex terms into simple form so that people can understand and get the benefit from his teachings.
A mentor is great to seek out at any stage of your career. They can help give you a new perspective and added confidence that you are on the right path or steer you towards a better path. Many famous and successful people would not be at the point they are in their lives without the help and advice from trusted mentors.
